The Basement Chateau Belew The

10.02

The Basement, Chateau Belew.

The sun is shining, the sky is blue. The grey canopy has receded from Mount Juliet.

Surprisingly, unexpectedly, an eruptile pencil fury. An idea gently beckoned earlier this morning and, rather than smiling politely & letting it continue on its way, I allowed the impulse to meet guitar. This was an intelligent act.

Several issues are related to this. The idea is in a musical area known to Crim. Why not abandon it & pursue "new" ideas? Surely Crim should be pushing the envelope? This is the kind of associational nonsense I associate with online commentary & professional reviewism (a disease so taken for granted we consider it an indication of robust health).

An alternative approach: an idea has presented itself; I recognize it: it is part of my musical vocabulary & also Crimson's; it is not "thought up".

Two immediate approaches, then (and those are not my only two options):

i) permit my musical choices to be governed by a mass of commentaries by others;
ii) follow where music beckons.

Why ignore music that one recognizes, simply because one recognizes it? Why be governed by the strategy of change for change's sake? There is the right time to change. There is also the right time to embrace one's heritage, tradition & history. There is the right time to do something, and the right time to do nothing. And that's only four available options.

Looking at it another way: I'll present it to the Crims and if they don't like it, we'll drop it. So simple, so easy.

The sun is shining.
